MODERN REHABILITATION IN NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES

NEUROPORT - MODERN REHABILITATION IN NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES

Movement limitations, depending on the extent and location of the lesions in the nervous system, may withdraw completely or lead to disability that may be slightly noticeable and of little inconvenience to the patient. At the other end of the scale, the disease will make the patient completely dependent on the help of another person and there will be a need for a permanent wheelchair. The most common adult neurological diseases that result in the onset of disability include stroke, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.

NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS: THE MOST COMMON DISEASES

Stroke

It belongs to the group of vascular diseases. Its risk increases with age and occurs mainly in the elderly, usually around the age of 70. The result of a stroke is the so-called hemiparesis. As the name suggests, it affects one side of the body - the limbs, trunk and sometimes the face. In more severe cases, there are motor problems, which include: difficulty moving from bed to: chair, wheelchair, toilet, problems with walking, use of the upper limb, especially the hand for precise movements and daily self-care activities. In such cases, it is necessary to use orthopedic aids in the form of an elbow crutch, a cane or a special version of a cane known as a tripod or quadripod. Other symptoms in this group of patients are communication difficulties due to aphasia, or speech disorders, and neuropsychological disorders.

Parkinson's disease

It belongs to neurodegenerative diseases. Although the disease can appear as early as age 40-50, its incidence increases about 10-fold above age 70. Men are more often affected than women. In the case of this condition, the symptoms that significantly impair a person's performance are progressive restrictions of movement throughout the body, caused by so-called muscular rigidity. It limits the ability to move independently, particularly evident in the lower limbs when trying to start walking and already during walking, when patients are forced to take very short steps. Another problem is the characteristic trembling of the hands, which limits the performance of precise movements, which in extreme forms completely excludes the possibility of self-care. The gait becomes unsteady and the patient is at risk of frequent falls due to slowed reactions, imbalance, and forced frontal tilt of the trunk.

Multiple Sclerosis

Like Parkinson's disease, it belongs to the group of neurodegenerative diseases. Women are about three times more likely to get the disease, and its onset is seen between the ages of 20 and 40. Symptoms have a less predictable pattern compared to stroke or Parkinson's disease. The progression of the disease, as well as the severity of symptoms, can vary widely among patients. Disability, depending on the nervous system structures involved, is caused by progressive muscular paresis of the upper limbs, lower limbs, trunk, sensory disturbances, balance disorders. In addition, there may be vision problems, pain syndromes, chronic fatigue, or cognitive and mood disorders. In the advanced stage of the disease, there are problems with walking, position changes, independent functioning in daily activities and self-care. Initially, the patient can get around with the help of crutches or a walker, but over time may need to use a wheelchair. An additional difficulty for the patient may be significantly severe spasticity and the occurrence of severe, sometimes painful spasms. In all of the above and in other less common nervous system diseases, such as craniocerebral trauma, spinal cord injury, neuromuscular diseases - patients need specialized medical care in terms of pharmacotherapy, extensive rehabilitation and psychological support. Rehabilitation in particular is a long and arduous process, requiring commitment and effort on the part of the patient with the constant support of loved ones.

NEUROLOGICAL DISEASE, WHAT'S NEXT? NEUROPORT COMES TO THE RESCUE AND ADDS HOPE

This type of rehabilitation is carried out by facilities specializing in adult neurorehabilitation. Facilities with this type of activity profile have prepared physiotherapeutic staff, appropriate rehabilitation equipment, provide nursing and assisted living care if round-the-clock care is needed, and allow access to psychological care. Often patients with neurological problems require support and assistance with many daily activities. This is especially true for those with severe disabilities. Hence, centers specializing in neurorehabilitation provide the greatest opportunities for improving function for those struggling with complications of neurological diseases. After all, only a holistic approach to the improvement process offers a chance for optimal improvement in performance and quality of life.

One of the centers dealing with rehabilitation in a broad sense is Ośrodek Rehabilitacji Neurologicznej i Ortopedycznej Neuroport w Poznaniu, which specializes in neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation. It is a new facility whose main business profile includes rehabilitation of adults with neurological and orthopedic diseases, as well as patients with secondary neurological symptoms as a result of oncological disease or its treatment. The center organizes rehabilitation holidays with full, round-the-clock care and allows outpatient treatment. With its qualified staff, modern equipment, functional and well-thought-out infrastructure, it allows patients to engage in the improvement process to the maximum extent, while taking into account the physical and psychological needs of each patient. Turnarounds and treatments at the Neuroport Center are provided on a commercial basis. The center's specialists include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, medical caregivers, a neurologist, a psychologist, an occupational therapist and a nutritionist.

REHABILITATION STAYS IN NEUROPORT. WHY IS IT WORTH IT?

During rehabilitation stays, each patient has the opportunity to benefit from individual physiotherapy focused on their current needs. Short- and long-term goals are set with the attending physiotherapist, so that the improvement process itself is optimized as much as possible. Exercises from neurological or orthopedic rehabilitation are conducted - depending on the need. In addition, each program, in addition to neuromuscular re-education methods, includes treatments from physical therapy, classical kinesitherapy, mirror therapy and supportive exercises on equipment dedicated to neurological patients - such as rotors to reduce spasticity or muscle stiffness.

OUTPATIENT REHABILITATION AT NEUROPORT

W przypadku pacjentów, którzy mają możliwość dojeżdżania na zabiegi do Ośrodka Rehabilitacji Neurologicznej i Ortopedycznej Neuroport, istnieje możliwość korzystania z codziennej rehabilitacji ambulatoryjnej.

ROBOTICS IN REHABILITATION AT NEUROPORT

What distinguishes the center Neuroportis the use of modern rehabilitation technology in the field of so-called rehabilitation robotics and devices from the "Sensory-Based Therapy" group. Support of classical physiotherapy with this type of equipment creates additional opportunities especially for people with neurological diseases, in whom, as a result of the disease, the function of the lower or upper extremities has been significantly reduced. One such device is the "Lokomat Pro 6" - which enables gait re-education even in those people who have lost this function due to illness. Regular training with the use of this technology makes it possible to prevent many consequences of neurological problems of the central and peripheral nervous system. The therapy is especially recommended for people with gait disorders after a stroke, craniocerebral trauma, in multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, or spinal cord injury. Other devices used at the center are the "Armeo Spring" and "Bimeo" - These are designed for rehabilitation of the upper extremities - and the "Manovo Spring" and "Music Glove" for rehabilitation of the hands. During therapy, the patient is able to observe the movement being performed on a monitor in real time. The constant viewing provides precise information about errors, so that they can be corrected in real time and the movement can be repeated many times until the desired pattern is achieved. Therapy sessions are planned and implemented in the form of computerized task games of varying degrees of difficulty. Graphics and sound effects make the necessary large number of required repetitions performed in this form attractive and motivating for the patient.

NEUROPORT OŚRODEK REHABILITACJI NEUROLOGICZNEJ I ORTOPEDYCZNEJ NIE ODMAWIA POMOCY
