STROKE - CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS

The WHO defines stroke as a sudden onset of focal or general brain dysfunction that lasts longer than 24 hours and is due to vascular causes. Factors that have a huge impact on the likelihood of stroke include heart disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, anticoagulation treatment, sleep apnea, diabetes, being overweight, poor diet and physical inactivity, alcohol abuse and smoking. A stroke occurs when a major arterial vessel in the brain ruptures, causing bleeding, or when the blood supply to the brain is blocked. Hence the division into ischemic stroke, which accounts for 80% of all cases (arterial blockage can occur due to a clot or atherosclerosis), and hemorrhagic stroke (the cause is usually hypertension or a ruptured aneurysm). Each is life-threatening and requires immediate medical intervention. Complications after a stroke are very serious, so the first 4.5 hours after the onset of the first symptoms are the most important. If proper help is given during this time, the patient has a chance of recovery, limiting disability or avoiding it altogether. The basic symptoms of a stroke are:
  • Facial muscle paralysis;
  • sensory disturbances;
  • speech problems;
  • weakness of a limb on one side of the body; vision problems;
  • dizziness;
  • loss of consciousness;
  • In severe cases, vomiting, urinary and fecal incontinence.
